A skateboarding park in Afghanistan might seem a little out of place, but in a country where nearly 70 percent of the population is under the age of 25, Oliver Percovich — the founder of the NGO Skateistan — decided there was an unique opportunity to work for peace. In Skateistan: The Story of Skateboarding in Afghanistan, Oliver explains, “The whole idea was that we’re building something for the kids, in Afghanistan, and it doesn’t matter if they’re poor, or rich, or coming from different ethnicities.” As soon as he loaned out a few boards, he says, “I saw the gleam in their eyes and knew they were hooked.” Since 2007, Skateistan has grown into an organization that employs youth from the street, teaches kids a new sport, and provides a please for boys and girls to play together.

Above, Erika, a Skateistan member, performs a jump called an ollie in front of the destroyed Buddha statues in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. The statues were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 because the hard-line group believed them to be un-Islamic.

“As a philosopher, the existentialist is supposed to make some sense out of the absurdity of existence, and to relate it to Being. Unlike the scientist, the philosopher can take nothing for granted, which is what Valéry meant by stating that science consists in pretending that you know what you do not know, and philosophy in pretending that you do not know what you know. The first statement may or may not apply to modern science, but it is a fact that one of the most arduous tasks facing the traditional philosopher is to prove the reality of his existence and of the world around him or, to use his own expression, ‘to get out of solipsism.’ This is not as easy as it seems. Among the arguments which Greek philosophy delighted in working out from close analysis of movement, multiplicity, and time, to prove that existence is an illusion, the well-know Heraclitean paradox concerning time will suffice for our purpose: the past is no more, the future is not yet, and present, closely considered, immediately splits between past and future, which proves that we really are not at any time. And if one wanted to do away with the ‘apparent world’ entirely, as some valiantly enthusiastic and foolish philosophers want to do, well then, assuming that people like you could do that—then at the very least there would be nothing left of your ‘truth,’ either! Really, why should we be forced to assume that there is an essential difference between ‘true’ and ‘false’ in the first place? Isn’t it enough to assume that there are degrees of apparency and, so to speak, lighter and darker shadows and hues of appearance—different valeurs, to use the language of painters? Why should the world that is relevant to us not be a fiction?
